It’s Not That Complicated

We humans have a tendency to over complicate relatively simple matters. I face it on the daily where I see and hear people complain all day everyday about their weight, their pain, their illness, heck even the fact that their hair wont grow and they are seriously upset with their wrinkles. Yet when you tell them all of their issues can be addressed through proper nutrition they laugh or get angry. “it’s not that simple…I have…” and the argument is off to a running start.

The fact is, science has proven it over and over again, what you feed your body matters. What you eat and drink affects the body’s chemical makeup, and either feeds illness or wellness. If the food you eat causes chemical reactions in your body and releases different hormones based on nutrients and vitamins you eat then why is it so hard to understand that it has an effect on chronic disease, mental health, inflammation and pain? I mean when you break down illness, ANY illness to a root cause, more often than not, it comes down to a lacking (or overabundance) mineral or nutrient; an over abundance of heavy metal or toxin, or in a lot of cases its stagnant lymphatic flow or improper functioning organs (which again is usually caused by the above mentioned root causes: toxic products, environment or lacking/excessive essential nutrients/ vitamins).

Have you ever gone to a doctor for an issue you are having, or multiple symptoms you’ve been struggling with, and the doctor sends you for blood work? You think you will finally get some answers and feel better, only to not get a call back cause “no news is good news” or they call you to tell you “congrats everything is normal”? Ever sit there wondering after you hang up, If everything came back “normal” then why am I still experiencing the symptomes? Well here is a fun fact: most medical Doctors don’t actually study nutrition! I’m not saying doctors are useless, and sure they have an important role in our health, but they study symptoms, disease and pharmaceutical treatment (not root causes and looking at the body as a whole system). If the issue didn’t show up in the blood, perhaps it’s in the lymph? Just a suggestion though Doc.

More recently I had a person upset with me because I told them their mental health can be put into remission through proper nutrition. After a back and forth of her telling me she cant help herself, because it’s a chemical imbalance in her brain and me telling her she can change the chemicals in her brain, she blocked me. The thing is that I am walking proof of being able to heal from mental illness, sure I still have minor bouts of depression (see my post Depression sucks! ) but I am able to recognise it and treat it through a nutrition fix rather than pills. Plus I no longer stay depressed for months, and I havent gone to that super dark place in years!

Fact is that some people just don’t want help cause being sick gives them an excuse to behave poorly, treat others badly, and gets them all the attention they desire (no one high fives you for drinking that kale smoothie, like they do when you are in a depressive episode and finally got out of bed to do that grocery shopping). In all seriousness though, before the dreaded block button was hit she said to me “well highly educated medical professionals would disagree with you,” she’s not wrong.

Most medical doctors, or at least the ones I have come across don’t agree with the holistic community. In spite of mounting evidence that people are healing their autoimmune issues, their cancers, their chronic pain, and mental illness the medical profession still refuses to acknowledge the power of food. It blows my mind! I could go off on a complete tangent here but I’m going to reel this back in and stay focused on the simplicity of healing. In the aforementioned argument I had (above paragraph), one of the other things she said is “it’s not as simple as food and exercise”, but the reality is that it really is that simple! Food when eaten is broken down in the system and releases minerals and nutrients that then cause chemical reactions and hormone secretions in the body/brain. Simple. Exercise and sunshine are proven to increase dopamine and serotonin which are essential for happiness and health. Simple.

Yes ok for those who actually study nutrition, the body, illness, and wellness we all know it is much more complex. Understanding what is lacking or what is causing the symptoms in order to fix the problem takes a lot of time and study, but the fact that proper food and exercise does affect a person’s ability to achieve wellness is the point here. Not everyone shares our passion for the science and medical studies in the holistic field, and this blog is for them.

The thing doctors and holistic practitioners do seem to agree on is that healthy eating and exercise is essential to wellness. Doctors don’t study extensive nutrition and still tend to believe that bread (loaded with gluten), and dairy is essential for a “well rounded diet” and “strong bones” (Insert face palm emoji). Holistic practitioners take a deeper look and search for understanding of how different foods, supplements, physical touch, and neurostimulation (among other things) can heal the body as a whole. The evidence is there if your willing to open your eyes and minds and explore your own wellness. To feel better you need to ask questions! If the test come back normal, ask WHY? Ask what can cause the symptoms that doesn’t show up in blood? If your doctor doesn’t have answers for you, find a holistic practitioner or someone who has healed from similar symptoms and find out what they did. Simple.

That ‘crazy” yoga pants wearing, plant based, essential oil loving friend of yours is onto something. There is a reason she’s 50 and still looks 30, has amazing hair, and is still running those 5k marathons at her age. Pain and illness is not a symptom of getting older, it’s a symptom that something is wrong and needs to be fixed!

I am not a doctor. I can’t give medical advice, and I cant claim I know how to cure anything! I can however share that I have put my own mental health diagnosis in remission, I have healed myself from my chronic pain and autoimmune diagnosis, and I have lost and kept off weight by exploring the root causes of my own issues. When the medical professionals failed me and started diagnosing, prescribing, and removing organs because they didn’t know what was causing the issues, I hit a breaking point. I said “Enough!” and went on my own journey. I turned myself into my own test subject (I wasn’t going to get any worse by trying) and it worked! That is proof enough for me that holistic healing is real and can benefit us all. It’s why I am sharing my stories, in hopes of helping others.

*** note: not all doctors are against holistic methods, and I am sure there are some really great family practitioners out there who are doing great things. My comments about doctors and the medical profession are generalized statements that reflect my personal experiences with doctors I have personally encountered, and the similar experiences of people I know.***
