Let’s talk Fluoride!

Ok so I am sure you have heard someone somewhere tell you that fluoride in your water is bad for you. They probably went on to tell you how they read something that said Hitler used Fluoride in the concentration camps because its a neurotoxin that subdued the prisoners. Now I can’t tell you with 100% certainty if the whole Hitler thing is true or not, but I can tell you that EXCESSIVE fluoride consumption is not healthy and doesn in fact cause neurological impairment among other things.

Let’s start by briefly explaining what Fluoride actually is. To put it simply, it is a naturally occuring mineral found in our teeth and bones. It is also found naturally in nature in water, soil, plants, rocks, and even in the air. It is essential in our teeth and bone health and in fact it prevents tooth decay and stops the harmful bacteria in our mouths from overgrowing.

Now you’re probably a little confused. Your friends and family, plus the internet are telling you that fluoride in our water is bad but I just said it naturally occurs in water so what the heck, right? Well let me explain. See while fluoride is a naturally occuring essential mineral, humans (as per usual) think they can make it better. Scientists get involved and think they can improve nature and next thing we know man made fluoride is in everything. Toothpaste, digital imaging scans (PET scans), cleaning products, pesticides, and in our water. Our drinking water goes through a recycling “cleaning” process where the water is often distilled to remove toxins and pollution to get it ready to be consumed. The distillation process not only removes the toxins though, it removes essential minerals that we need. So people add those minerals back in. Adding minerals back in don’t necessarily pose a risk but the amounts can often be in excess of what would be naturally found in say fresh spring water. Water treatment facilities monitor the water all the time, and studies are frequently done. In fact the studies typically have shown the the levels of fluoride or other minerals in the water are rarely at a toxic level and are considered in the safe range. However, the problem arises when you combine the amount in our water, along with the amount in our toothpaste, our cleaning products, pesticides on food, and well you get the point. We are just consuming too much through multiple sources!

The over consumption of a good thing is essentially the problem with the entire north american lifestyle really. I mean a little sugar here and there wouldn’t lead to chronic inflammation, or a little of grandma’s homemade bread here and there wouldn’t lead to leaky gut. It’s the excess that is making us sick. Fluoride in the body in high amounts has been linked to: Low IQ scores, bone and uterine cancer, osteoarthritis, kidney disease, immune suppression, gastrointestinal disorders, and more…

The truth is that fluoride is not the enemy it is made out to be, we actually need it in order to maintain healthy bones and teeth among other functions; but how can you reduce the amount your taking in to keep your levels healthy? Start by eliminating it where you can. Daily household products. Start with your toothpaste and cleaning products. Let’s face it not only is it extra fluoride there is a bunch of other toxic junk in there that you just don’t need.

For the purpose of this blog I will share with you what I do for brushing my own teeth to reduce my fluoride intake (if you want help detoxing your household products and daily beauty routine s message me on facebook https://wildwellness.health.blog/https-www-facebook-com-wildwellness-ca/). I like to use Coconut oil and baking soda (sometimes with a little essential oil). Coconut oil is a natural teeth whitener that detoxifies the mouth and helps to balance hormones. It even reduces inflammation and stabilizes blood sugar (Look into “Oil Pulling” benefits). Baking soda is great because its grainy texture helps to scrub the teeth and make them super smooth, but it also has health benefits. Some of the benefits to baking soda are that it neutralizes acidity, and balances pH levels which prevents tooth decay and plaque build up! Its actually really beneficial to drink too, but ill discuss that at a later date. Sometimes I will add a drop of essential oil to my coconut oil and baking soda paste. My fav is francisence for its immune boosting and healthy cellular function properties . If you are going to use an essential oil however please make sure you are using a high grade oil that has a nutrition label and is intended for internal consumption! Comment below or at the facebook like provided above if you have questions about oils.

I hope you found this blog informative and please feel free to leave me a comment with any questions you have. Also if you end up trying this please let me know your thoughts and share out this blog!

Thanks!
